Ball clays are fine-grained, highly plastic clays that contain three minerals – kaolinite, mica and quartz. Ball clay is used in manufacturing ceramic whiteware and sanitaryware. It has the unique properties of extra plasticity, pliable, and when burnt, unlike most earthenware clays, they produce a high-quality white-colored pottery body, which is why they are so popular with potters. Selected ball clays can even give pure white products, making their applications widespread. The main difference between Kaolin and Ball clay is that it is more flexible and less refractory.
